Rich and diverse in history, the nation’s capitol of Washington DC also has a significant growing number of Hispanic and Latino residents. 581,530 residents were counted in the 2000 Census. 47,775 described themselves as being of Hispanic or Latino origin with 35,030, or nearly three-fourths, using Spanish as their primary language at home.

Washington, DC, recognizes the wealth of its Hispanic population by celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month every year from September 15 to October 15. Throughout area schools, libraries, and public centers, Hispanic culture is celebrated through festivals, events, food, and entertainment for all ages. Fiesta DC is also an annual celebration of Hispanic culture in Washington DC, usually in late September of every year. The celebration includes booths of vendors of cultural arts and treasures, music, entertainment, and ethnic food with plenty of spice.
